Ambush in Surabaya
The battle of Surabaya was one of the deadliest battle to have been fought after the end of World War II. Fought by the Indonesian Pro-Independence soldiers and militia against British and British Indian troops, this battle marked in history that Indonesia was ready for revolution. Despite a military victory by British troops, who came in fully equipped, it was a strategic and political win by Indonesia. Thousands of Indonesian blood was poured on the streets of Surabaya, and alongside it the bodies of British and Indian soldiers. The 10th of November is remembered to this day as Hari Pahlawan, or Heroes' Day.
In the picture I drew, I pictured a Type 97 Chi-Ha, one of less than a hundred tanks captured from the then-surrendered Japanese. A majority of these were modified with captured British QF 6-Pounder anti-tank guns. The significant firepower was capable of penetrating the side of the British owned Sherman, seen on the street along with a Bren machine gunner and a rifleman. The battle may have been fought during the rainy season, and due to intensive bombing by British bombers, the city was destroyed before they even arrived.
